PITMAN, N.J. — Freshman forward
Ryan Savoy (Lakewood, N.J./Lakewood) of the New Jersey City University men's basketball team had the most outstanding weekend of his young collegiate career, and for that he was rewarded by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) as the Player and Rookie of the Week today, Monday, March 1.
The Gothic Knights faced off with Montclair State University for a home-and-home NJAC series this weekend, and Savoy helped NJCU to a 76-67 home victory on Friday night, Feb. 26, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) and an 87-69 win on the road at the Red Hawks. The freshman was everything but a rookie in these two games with MSU, notching the first two double-doubles of his collegiate career. On Friday night he finished with a game-high-tying 19 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three blocks and closed out the weekend with game highs in points (20) and rebounds (11) and was 10-of-13 from the floor with three steals and two blocks.
These are the first-career honors for Savoy. He and the rest of the Gothic Knights will be back in action on Friday night, March 5, as the #2 seed of the 2020-21 NJAC Tournament. They will host #8 Rutgers-Camden at the JMAC. A limited amount of fans will be allowed in attendance; the rest can watch the game live at NJCUGothicKnights.com/GothicVision.
