NJAC Recognizes Four Gothic Knights with Weekly Honors; Skyline Highlights a Pair

March 15, 2021

PITMAN, N.J. / NEW YORK — A total of five Gothic Knights combined to collect six weekly honors on Monday, March 15, thanks to their stellar performances this past week. The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) honored four New Jersey City University student-athletes, while the Skyline Conference recognized a pair.

Sophomore middle blocker Martin Chromulak (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) of the men's volleyball team was announced as the NJAC and Skyline Player of the Week after dominating for NJCU in the squad's doubleheader straight-set sweep at home over Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday, March 14. He began with a match-high 10 kills and one error on 15 swings (.600 hitting pct.). He also tied the match high with a career-high-tying seven aces to go with a dig. The 6-foot-7 middle upped the ante in the second match of the day with a career-high and match-high 14 kills and one error on 17 swings (.765) to go with four digs and a block. His fellow sophomore Richard Valentin (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) was named Skyline Libero of the Week after getting the nod to wear the off-color uniform for the Gothic Knights in match one on Sunday. He led NJCU with a team-high and career-high-tying eight digs, adding one assist.

Freshman guard Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) of the women's basketball team finally broke through and earned her first NJAC Player of the Week honor — she previously notched three rookie of the weeks — with what seems like just another stellar performance. She poured in a career- and game-high 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting in the full 40 minutes as NJCU upset #2 The College of New Jersey on Friday night, March 12, in the NJAC Semifinals. The win gives the Gothic Knights their first-ever bid to the NJAC Championship game in program history, which will be played at #1 Montclair State University on Friday, March 19, at 5:00 p.m. She also added a game-high four assists, a game-high-tying two steals, five rebounds and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line.

Junior goalkeeper Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) of the women's soccer team was selected as the NJAC's Defensive Player of the Week after a stellar performance in net for the Gothic Knights as her squad pushed Montclair State to the brink in the team's season-opening 2-1 loss at home on Saturday, March 13. The NJCU netminder stopped nine of 11 on-target attempts by the Red Hawks, several of which were highlight reel saves.

And last but not least, sophomore* pitcher and outfielder Justin Wiltsey (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Hamilton West) of baseball squad was selected as the NJAC's Rookie of the Week. Wiltsey had a strong week on the mound and at the plate for NJCU as his team went 1-3 to open the season. The sophomore got the start in game two against Kean University in Friday's doubleheader loss at the Cougars. He tossed 5.2 quality innings, allowing three earned on seven hits and two walks in the loss. At the plate, he was 3-for-12 (.250) with two RBI, a double, a triple, three walks and three runs scored. He also stole a pair on three attempts. He began 1-for-4 in the Thursday, March 11, loss at William Paterson University. On Saturday in the win at Centenary University, Wiltsey was 2-for-3 with three runs, a double, a triple and two RBI. He also walked three times and stole two bases.
