Men's Soccer Ends Regular-Season at Home Against Stockton

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's soccer team, due to a series of cancelations, completed play of its abbreviated 2020-21 season today, Wednesday March 24. The Gothic Knights slogged through the mud and rain all afternoon long against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Stockton University, but suffered the 2-0 loss at home on the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

NJCU (0-3, 0-3 NJAC) saw junior goalkeeper Nick Linebaugh (Linden, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) get the start in net against the Ospreys (3-2, 3-2 NJAC). The first-year transfer made a trio of nice saves  in the game's first 35 minutes to keep the Gothic Knights in a scoreless game before Stockton eventually broke through for the match's initial goal. The Stockton tally was preceded in the 39th minute by the game's first yellow card — the team's combined for four on the day.

The Gothic Knighs were called for a foul just outside the box in the 41st, setting up a free kick for Stockton. The Ospreys' midfielder was able to put the free kick in the back of the net in the 42nd to make it 1-0.

Both squads were each called for one yellow apiece in the first eight minutes of the second half, however, minus another yellow against NJCU in the 66th, the game did not amount to much action aside from a good amount of headers on each side all over the field. The match's second and final goal came in the 75th when a through ball found the foot of another Osprey and beat Linebaugh.

Despite the end of the regular season, the Gothic Knights will be back in action on Saturday, April 3, for the NJAC Tournament Quarterfinals at a to be determined location.
