Men's Tennis Rolls Past Rutgers-Camden in Return to Court After 22-Year Break

WEST ORANGE, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's tennis team has kicked off its first season in 22 years the absolute right way, picking up the 9-0 win over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Rutgers-Camden at the West Orange Tennis Club today, Friday, March 26. Following the halt of the program after the 1999 season, the Gothic Knights have been ready and raring to go since the department announced the addition of the sport in April of 2019.

The match itself began just before 11:00 a.m., and the Gothic Knights (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) ran through doubles play while losing just one individual set out of the 25 played. The same six players saw action in all the singles matches for NJCU against the Scarlet Raptors (0-1, 0-1 NJAC). A pair of freshmen in Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) and Toni Cabo took first doubles 8-1, followed by another rookie in Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) and junior D-I transfer Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) for an 8-0 win at second doubles. Freshmen Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and Gerard Loras (Tortosa, Spain/Col·legi Diocesà Sagrada Família) picked up an 8-0 win at third doubles as well.

Singles action saw the match officially end in the Gothic Knights' favor pretty quickly, as Ley took the 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles, followed by Julia at fifth singles (6-0, 6-1) to give NJCU five wins and the match victory on the day. Bourghelle won at first singles (6-0, 6-1), while Teynie (6-0, 6-1), Cabot (6-0, 6-0) and Loras (6-1, 6-1) also notched wins in their matches.
