JERSEY CITY, N.J — For the first time ever, the New Jersey City University men's and women's basketball programs will be HOSTING New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament games at home in the same season, on the same night. Tomorrow, Friday, March 5, the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) will play host to a pair of NJAC Quarterfinal matchups at 5:00 p.m. (women) and 8:00 p.m. (men).
NJCU Women:
The Gothic Knights finished the regular-season with a 6-2 overall record, all eight games coming in NJAC play, en route to earning the third overall seed in the Tournament and a home quarterfinal matchup with sixth-seeded William Paterson University. NJCU swept its home-and-home series with the Pioneers this season, defeating WPU 69-49 at home on Feb. 19, and then topping them 62-46 in Wayne, N.J. the following day. Rookie
Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) led the Gothic Knights to the win in the first gme with 19 points on 7-of-11 from the floor, including 4-of-4 from three, to go with collegiate-bests in assists (9) and steals (7). Senior
Dayjah Anderson (East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) was the focal point in game two as she finished with 24 points (11-of-18 shooting), five boards and two steals.
This is the second consecutive season that NJCU has reached the NJAC Tournament in just the third year at the helm of the program for head coach
Pat Devaney, Sr. Additionally, according to NJCU record books, this will be the first-ever home NJAC Tournament game in program history.
NJCU Men:
NJCU completed its regular-season campaign with a 5-1 record, again with all games coming in NJAC play. The Gothic Knights earned themselves the #2 overall seed and will host #8 Rutgers-Camden at The JMAC. The two squads did not face one another during the 2020-21 regular-season, however NJCU did sweep the Scarlet Raptors in two games last season. Seniors
Denzel Banks (Newark, NJ/East Orange Campus) and
Jahmere Calhoun (Manchester, NJ/Brick Memorial) were important pieces during those victories. They both notched double-doubles in the home 83-66 win on Jan. 18, 2020 — 15 points, 10 rebounds for Banks; 14 points, 10 rebounds for Calhoun. In the road 92-70 win in Camden, N.J., on Feb. 15, 2020, Banks poured in 22 points, while Calhoun registered yet another double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds).
The Gothic Knights have competed in the NJAC Tournament in nine consecutive seasons, dating back to to 2012-13. This will also be the program's first home Tournament contest since 2018-19 when they hosted Rowan University in the NJAC Championship game on Feb. 22, 2019.
