HISTORY MADE: Women's Wrestling's Henry and Guerrero Earn All-America Honors at NCWWC Nationals in Program's Inaugural Season

March 06, 2021

TIFFIN, Ohio — The New Jersey City University women's wrestling team has made history! The Gothic Knights had a trio of wrestlers compete at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship (NCWWC) in the program's inaugural season, and a pair of NJCU grapplers — freshmen Sandra Guerrero (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) (191 lbs.) and Naomi Henry (Brooklyn, N.Y./Wingate Educational Campus) (130 lbs.) — each earned the distinction of All-America by placing in the top eight in the nation in their respective weight classes. The tournament was held throughout the day today, Saturday, March 6, at Tiffin University.

Overall, there were 22 teams represented at nationals, and the Gothic Knights managed to finish in a tie for 13th place overall. Individually, Freshman Johnae Drumright (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) (109 lbs.), Henry and Guerrero competed for NJCU.

Henry dropped her opening match at 130 pounds to Sierra Brown Ton of Augsburg University, but proceeded to dominate her next two matches on the consolation side of the bracket, securing a pair of technical fall victories to earn a spot in the consolation quarterfinals and secure at least an eighth-place finish and All-America status. First she defeated Makenzie Tayerle of Adrian College 12-0 and then topped Leidaly Rivera of Limestone University 14-4. Henry ultimately dropped her next two matches, including a hard-fought seventh-place match where she lost by a slim 8-6 decision to Eunique Davis of Tiffin.

Guerrero also dropped her first match to move to the consolation side of the bracket, but picked up the victory in her next match via a 12-7 decision over Leya Deickman of Ferrum College. The win secured Guerrero a spot in the consolation quarterfinals, which guaranteed her at least eighth place and All-America status. Like Henry, Guerrero nearly pulled off the win in the seventh-place match, falling by a slim 6-4 decision to Amara Devericks of Gannon University.

With the completion of NCWWC Nationals, the NJCU women's wrestling program's inaugural season has come to a close. High hopes await the Gothic Knights in the future.
