NJCU Earns Three NJAC Rookie of the Week Honors

March 08, 2021

PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) announced its weekly award winners today, Monday, March 8, and the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights reeled in a trio of Rookie of the Week honors, belonging to women's basketball's Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus), men's volleyball's Mahmoud Serour (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and Julius Libutsi (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) of men's cross country.

Rodriguez continued her run of dominance in her freshman campaign as the newcomer led the Gothic Knights to a 68-60 victory over William Paterson University at home on Friday night, March 5, in the NJAC Tournament quarterfinals. She tied her career high with a game-best 23 points and added five assists, three rebounds, two steals and a block in the win over the Pioneers. Rodriguez has managed to score in double-figures in every game she's played in during her short time as a collegian. She now has three NJAC Rookie of the Week honors this season.

Serour started on the outside in match #2 against Yeshiva University on Sunday, March 7, in Skyline Conference action as the Gothic Knights split their squad in two for a pair of 3-0 victories over the Maccabees. Serour recorded seven kills and five digs, but his highlight of the day was an astounding 10 service aces (3.33/set) to set a program single-match record. He now has two NJAC Rookie of the Week awards for the 2021 campaign.

Libutsi helped men's cross country finish in second out of five teams on Saturday, March 6, at the Stockton University Osprey Invitational. The freshman was the Gothic Knights' top finisher, placing sixth overall out of 27 runners in the 5K with a time of 18:23.04. This is the first award of Libutsi's career.

Rodriguez and women's basketball return to action on Friday afternoon, March 12, at 4:00 p.m. for the NJAC Tournament semifinals at second-seeded The College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J. Serour and the men's volleyball squad return to the court on Sunday, March 14, for a home double-header with Sarah Lawrence College at 10:00 a.m. Libutsi and the men's and women's cross country teams hit the course next for the NJAC Championships on the same Stockon course in Galloway, N.J., on Saturday, March 20.
