JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-7) defeat in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play at home on Tuesday night, March 9, at the hands of Rutgers-Camden at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC).
Despite the loss for the Gothic Knights (0-2, 0-2 NJAC), rookie
Taylor-Michelle Coriolan (Roselle, N.J./Roselle Catholic) had a very strong night and finished with eight kills and two errors on 15 swings (.400 hitting percentage) to go with four digs. Her kill total was tied for the second-highest on the night, as just one member of the Scarlet Raptors (2-1, 2-1 NJAC) had more with 10.
Set number one was close in the early going, as NJCU managed to keep it tight at 9-7 before Rutgers-Camden was able to close it out at 25-11. However, the Gothic Knights had their strongest set of this young, abbreviated season in game number two. Trailing by 10 late in the set at 21-11, the home squad reeled off nine of the next 12 points to make it a 24-20 game. Over that span, Coriolan notched a pair of kills, while junior
Yaidettive Vega (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) recorded an ace and another rookie in
Ashley Jiminez (West New York, N.J./Memorial) notched a kill as well. The Scarlet Raptors were able to close out the night with a tough third set for NJCU.
Highlights:
- Jiminez finished with four kills on eight errorless swings (.500).
- Freshman
Sydney Lore (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) led the Gothic Knights with 11 assists.
- Another rookie,
Nicollete Martinez (Park Ridge, N.J./Academy of the Holy Angels), led NJCU with seven digs and two aces as the libero.
- Junior
Leah Seickendick (Hoboken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) led all players with a match-high four total blocks.
The Gothic Knights return to the court for another home match on Thursday night, March 11, at 6:00 p.m. against NJAC rival William Paterson University.
