WAYNE, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's soccer team closed out play for its 2020-21 regular season this evening, April 1, with a tough 2-1 road loss at New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent William Paterson University. The Gothic Knights now prepare for their first berth in the NJAC Tournament since the 2011 season as they compete in the first round as the seventh seed against sixth-seeded Kean University on Saturday, April 3, in Union, N.J.
How it Happened
In today's match, the Pioneers (1-2-1, 1-2-1 NJAC) opened the scoring in the seventh minute on the first shot of the game to make it 1-0. However, NJCU (0-4, 0-4 NJAC) came back in the 24th minute on a great sequence of events. After the ball was sent out of bounds on the near corner in the Gothic Knights' offensive zone, a throw-in attempt found junior
Victoria Gil (South River, N.J./South River) open just outside the corner of the box. The co-captain sent a cross right in front of the net and fellow junior
Jasmine Bass (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) headed the ball past the WPU keeper for her first goal of the season.
Just one more shot on goal was attempted for the remainder of the first half, taken by the Pioneers, but it was turned away by NJCU's freshman keeper
Marissa Lotierzo (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade). The rookie finished the day with four total saves in just her second-career game and first start of her collegiate career.
Unfortunately, early in the 54th minute in the Gothic Knights' offensive zone, Gil was called for a yellow card, leading to an offensive zone free kick for William Paterson just past the midfield line. The ball was sent all the way over both teams' heads, ricocheted off Lotierzo's gloves and rolled behind her toward the goal before it was put in by the Pioneers for the eventual game-winner.
