Five Gothic Knights Honored by NJAC with Weekly Honors

April 12, 2021

PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) announced its weekly honors today, Monday, April 12, and New Jersey City University saw five individual student-athletes garner recognition. The men's tennis team swept the NJAC East Weekly Honors (Player and Rookie) and the recently-NCAA bound men's volleyball squad swept all three honors (Player, Defensive, Rookie) as well.

Men's Tennis NJAC East Player of the Week: In what was a groundbreaking win for the men's tennis program, freshman Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) helped lead the Gothic Knights to the 5-4 upset on the road over The College of New Jersey on Saturday, April 10. The rookie was part of the only NJCU doubles pair — #2 — to pick up a win on the day as he and fellow freshman Toni Cabot (Palma, Spain/IES Albuhaira) defeated Adrian Tsui and Akul Telluri of the Lions, 8-4. Then, with the Gothic Knights one match away from falling to TCNJ, trail 4-1 overall, NJCU started a comeback in singles play. Finally tied at 4-4, it all came down to second singles and Teynie came through. The Frenchman dropped the first set in a tough, 12-point tie break (6-7) before cruising through the second and third sets (6-3, 6-2) against Matthew Michibata to win his match and clinch the historic victory for his squad.

Men's Tennis NJAC East Rookie of the Week: Cabot, as mentioned, was also a huge part of NJCU's monumental 5-4 upset victory at TCNJ. The rookie first teamed up with Teynie at second doubles for the win. Then, with a comeback needed in singles play as NJCU initially trailed 4-1 overall, and 4-3 at the time, Cabot won in three sets at fourth singles (6-7, 6-2, 6-4) to tie it up at 4-4 before Teynie won it at second singles for the Gothic Knights.

NJAC Men's Volleyball Player of the Week: Named Most Outstanding Player at the 2021 Skyline Conference Championship on Saturday, senior Jonathan Andrews (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) returned from injury to lead the Gothic Knights to their first-ever conference title in program history, as well as NJCU's first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. After not having played since March 7, Andrews made his return by playing one set in the semifinals against Sarah Lawrence College to get back into the swing of things and was extremely efficient against the Gryphons. He was 6-for-7 with one error on attack attempts (.714 hitting pct.) and added three digs and two total blocks. Then, with the rust officially shaken, Andrews took over the championship match against St. Joseph's College-L.I. and led all players with a career-best 26 kills on 54 swings with eight errors (.333) to go with nine digs and two assists. This was the only time all season a Gothic Knight had 20-plus kills and, despite playing in half the matches as most of his teammates, Andrews heads into NCAAs tied for the team lead in total kills (48).

NJAC Men's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week: After watching for the sidelines as many of the reserves competed in the semifinal match against SLC, sophomore middle blocker Brandon DaSilva (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) got the nod on the front row for the Skyline title tilt against St. Joe's-L.I. He proceeded to lead all players with a career-high-tying eight total blocks to go with three digs and a career-best 11 kills on 25 swings with four errors (.280 hitting pct.).

NJAC Men's Volleyball Rookie of the Week: Sophomore Hanel Collado (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) also did not see action in the semifinal on Saturday, however the first-year Gothic Knight got the start on the outside in the championship contest against the Golden Eagles later in the afternoon. Collado proceeded to notch a career-best 12 kills — second highest on the team — on 31 swings with six errors (.194) and added two digs, two total blocks and an assist.
