Gothic Knights Earn a Trio of Weekly NJAC Awards

May 10, 2021

PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) released its weekly awards today, Monday, May 10, and New Jersey City University picked up three honorees. After helping the NJCU men's tennis squad capture its first NJAC Title ever — and in the inaugural season after a 22-year hiatus no less — the freshman pair of Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) and Toni Cabot (Palma, Spain/IES Albuhaira) swept the men's tennis weekly awards, while freshman Sam Miller (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) of NJCU softball picked up weekly accolades as well.

Teynie, the NJAC Player of the Week, was a big reason why the Gothic Knights were able to capture the NJAC Men's Tennis Championship, going 2-0 in doubles and 1-0 in singles in the championship-clinching match. He started — paired with Cabot — at first doubles in the Friday, May 7, semifinal win over Rutgers-Camden, taking the 8-0 victory during the 5-0 defeat of the Scarlet Raptors. Then, on Sunday, May 9, he and Cabot teamed up at second doubles and fought hard for the 8-6 victory against The College of New Jersey. Finally, with NJCU needing one more win to clinch the title, Teynie emerged victorious at second singles (6-4, 6-4) with his winning point claiming the crown for the Gothic Knights.

Cabot, the NJAC Rookie of the Week, also played a huge role for NJCU in its pursuit of the championship. The rookie went 2-0 in doubles play and 1-0 in singles. As mentioned, he started with an 8-0 win at first doubles on Friday with Teynie. And again, paired with Teynie, in Sunday's exciting 5-3 victory over TCNJ to claim the conference championship, the duo earned the second doubles win. Finally, in need of a win to tie it up at the time, Cabot cruised to a (6-0, 6-3) win at fourth singles.

Last but not least, Miller — the NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week — and the Gothic Knights softball team competed in the NJAC Tournament for the first time since 2000, and Miller almost got them past Rutgers-Camden in the First Round on Tuesday, May 4, tossing a stellar 6.2 innings in the loss. She allowed just four hits and struck out three batters without allowing an earned run. Unfortunately the Scarlet Raptors did score a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to advance past NJCU.
