PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) announced its 2021 men's tennis all-conference teams today, Tuesday, May 4, and the New Jersey City University men's tennis team dominated the East Division All-NJAC team. The Gothic Knights earned Player and Rookie of the Year, as well as co-Coach of the Year and five all-conference selections.
Leading the way was junior
Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille), the NJAC Player of the Year and First Team selection in both singles and doubles. A transfer from Division I Wright State University, the native of France finished the regular-season with an overall record of 3-1 in singles play, all at first, with his only loss coming in non-conference play at #6
(NCAA Division III Atlantic South Region) Southern Virginia University by way of an injury default. Bourghelle is currently ranked as the #11 singles player in the NCAA Division III Northeast Region. Additionally, he posted a 2-2 record in doubles play, again all at first, including a 2-1 mark in NJAC play. His marquee victory to this point came back on April 10 at The College of New Jersey when he defeated two-time First Team selection Justin Wain at first singles in straight sets, 7-6(7-4), 6-1.
Rookie of the Year went to freshman
Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine), who also garnered First Team honors in both singles and doubles. Also a native of France, Teynie finished his regular season at 4-1 in singles play, including a 3-0 mark at second singles in NJAC play. In doubles, he also finished 4-1 and was a perfect 3-0 in NJAC competition, including one win at first doubles and two at second. His marquee win so far also came on the road at the Lions back in April when he won a highly-contested match in three sets at second singles — 6-7(5-7), 6-3, 6-2 — over reigning co-Rookie of the Year and two-time First Team selection Matthew Michibata.
Helping lead his team to a perfect 3-0 mark in NJAC play in their first season as a varsity program at NJCU after a 22-year hiatus, head coach
Nick Margiasso was selected as co-Coach of the Year along with reigning COY, TCNJ's Scott Dicheck. Margiasso has done a wonderful job growing the program in a short amount of time, exemplified by the Gothic Knights' top seed in the 2021 NJAC Tournament, as well as their most recent #12 ranking in the Northeast Region. Additionally, as mentioned, he helped guide the seasons of Bourghelle and Teynie, all the way to Player and Rookie of the Year honors, respectively, as well as a total of four players to five First Team accolades.
Joining Bourghelle and Teynie on the All-NJAC team were freshmen
Toni Cabot (Palma, Spain/IES Albuhaira) and
Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles). Cabot earned First Team honors in both singles and doubles. He finished the regular season with a 4-1 record in singles play, including a 3-0 mark at fourth singles in NJAC play. At doubles, he was also 4-1, including a 3-0 mark in the NJAC — he was 1-0 at first and 2-0 and second doubles in conference competition. His marquee win this year came at second doubles against TCNJ when he and Teynie teamed up to beat First Team selection Adrian Tsui and his partner Akul Telluri, 8-4 — Cabot also defeated Telluri in a fourth singles battle later that day, 6-7(4-7), 6-2, 6-4. Julia, teamed with Bourghelle, earned First Team doubles honors to round out the bunch. Overall, the pair finished 2-1 in NJAC competition, including 1-1 at first doubles.
