May 06, 2021

EWING, N.J. — The second and final day of the multis portion of the 2021 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships — hosted by The College of New Jersey — came to a close earlier this evening, Thursday, May 6. For New Jersey City University, the program had one competitor throughout the two days, junior Jerard Johnson (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder) of the men's squad. He became the first-ever decathlete in program history, thus establishing a school record in the decathlon. Overall, he recorded eight personal records in 10 events throughout the multis competition, including four on Thursday.

Johnson, who placed sixth overall in the men's decathlon to earn three points toward NJCU's team score for the NJAC Championships, began Thursday with the 110m high hurdles, in which he placed third with a time of 19.62. He then competed in discus and placed fifth with a toss of 23.28m. Up next was pole vault and the junior cleared a height of 2.05m to come in sixth. The penultimate event of the competition was javelin, in which Johnson threw for a distance of 27.25m to place sixth once again. In the day's final event — the 1,500m — Johnson clocked in a time of 7:49.75 to place sixth.

He and the rest of the Gothic Knights return to the track this weekend, with the traditional portion of the NJAC Championships taking place at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J. The women kick it off first on Saturday, May 8, at 11:00 a.m.. Johnson and the men then compete on Sunday, May 9, also at 11:00 a.m. Make sure to follow along with live stats throughout the entirety of the NJAC Championships via this link.
