JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Just after the release of the 2020-21 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-Academic squads, the New Jersey City University baseball program hopped on the academic honors train with a pair of outstanding national accolades of its own. Earlier today, Thursday, July 1, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released their annual Academic All-District teams for baseball and softball, and senior designated hitter
Leo Colon (Carteret, N.J./St. Anthony (Jersey City)) and junior first baseman/right fielder
Ricky Voss (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) became the third and fourth selections in Gothic Knights' baseball history. Their honors also brought the number of CoSIDA Academic All-District selections for NJCU overall to 27.
Having been named as Academic All-District selections, Colon and Voss are now officially nominated for Academic All-America. Voting among the nation's Division III Sports Information Directors/Athletic Communicators will take place from July 6-13.
Voss, a finance major with a 3.87 cumulative grade point average, led the Gothic Knights in 2021 in home runs (4), runs scored (19), total bases (55), slugging percentage (.491) and stolen bases (14-of-16) and was second in batting (.286), RBI (14), hits (32), walks (17) and on-base percentage (.407). He was one of just two players to start all 30 games this past season and, in the field, made just three errors on 183 chances (.984). Additionally, he had a career-best 10-game on-base streak from March 25-April 10 and notched eight multi-hit games. Off the field, Voss is a two-time Honorable Mention Academic All-NJAC selection as a sophomore and junior. He has also served as an athletic communications student assistant for two years.
Colon, who recently graduated with a B.S. in Fire Science while sporting a 3.72 cumulative grade point average, was a Honorable Mention All-NJAC selection this past season after finishing second on NJCU in runs scored (17) and stolen bases (13) and third in batting (.253) and hits (25). He had nine multi-hit games and three multi-steal performances. Off the field, Colon is a three-time Honorable Mention Academic All-NJAC honoree, earning the distinction as a sophomore, junior and senior.
