GENEVA, N.Y. — After seeing some success in doubles action on day one of the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships, the New Jersey City University women's tennis team picked up a trio of victories on Sunday, Sept. 19, in the consolation bracket. The tournament was hosted by William Smith College.
All of the Gothic Knights that competed on the day played single pro-style sets (first to eight games, win by two) and each played against top tier Northeast Division III talent. Starting off on the victorious side was was freshman
Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School) as she defeated Becky Andrews of Ithaca College, 8-6. Junior co-captain
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) was next to win after she defeated Mackenzie Wade of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 8-2. Lastly, junior
Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) was able to pick up a nice 8-2 victory against future New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Sarah Phung of The College of New Jersey.
Out of the other four matches, NJCU had a couple of really strong performances. First, freshman
Mila Gligorov (Milan, Italy/Collegio San Carlo) battled to the last point against Kirsten Auble of RIT, falling 8-7(9-7). Graduate student co-captain
Brittany Waugh (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) also found herself in a tiebreak as she fell to Onalee Batcheller of Union College, 8-7(7-5).
The Gothic Knights now take just over two weeks off before their final action of the Fall portion of their season. NJCU will host York College (N.Y.) on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 7, at 12:00 p.m. in a true dual match.
