Women’s Soccer Falls in NJAC Tilt at Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The New Jersey City University women's soccer team traveled to play Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 25. NJCU struggled to get past the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe in the Red Hawks, resulting in a 4-0 defeat.

MSU (6-2, 2-0 NJAC) started out strong, taking the first shot of the game within the first minute. Seconds later, Red Hawks' Sofia Ambrosio scored the first goal off of an MSU corner kick. The home team didn't back down, taking multiple shots on the NJCU (2-4-2, 0-2 NJAC) goal. Gothic Knight senior goalkeeper Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) ended with a total of two saves throughout the first half. After a chunk of play, MSU's Renee Rocha scored the second goal in the 36th minute. The Gothic Knights were unable to reciprocate shots as the first half closed out.

NJCU sophomore goalkeeper Angie Paz (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) substituted in to start the second half. Paz ended with a total of three saves. Multiple fouls and missed MSU shots took place 15 minutes into the half. In the 60th minute, Red Hawks' Zoe Steck put the third goal into the net. Jersey City now trailed 3-0 to the host team.

Minutes later, MSU Chisom Onyewuenyi was substituted into the game. Following a foul on Gothic Knight junior Arame Diouf (Weehawken, N.J./Memorial), Onyewuenyi scored the fourth and final goal of the game. In the 68th minute, a yellow card was given to Red Hawks' Niki Danz. Two more yellows were given out during the final stretch – one to Jersey City senior Victoria Gil (South River, N.J./South River) and another to MSU's Samantha Ondrush.

Sophomore Krysti Alejandro (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) closed out the game with the first and only shot of the day for the Gothic Knights. Alejandro missed wide, leaving the Red Hawks victorious at 4-0.
