BRONX, N.Y. — In need of some big bounce back wins after a tough New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) loss a couple days ago, the New Jersey City University women's volleyball team did just that, dominating its way to a pair of three-set victories at a tri-match, hosted by Lehman College on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Gothic Knights toppled the hosting Lightning first 3-0 (25-12, 25-7, 25-5) and then took down Maritime College in straight sets (25-20, 20-17, 20-17) as well.
vs. Lehman
Things began an a very high note for the Gothic Knights (8-1) as they ran through Lehman (0-3) easily in the morning. A pair of seniors led the way for NJCU as middle blocker
Leah Seickendick (Hoboken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) and libero
Krista Bartko (Edison, N.J./Edison) were extremely efficient. The former led all players with a match-best eight kills and one error on nine swings (.778 hitting percentage) to go with one solo block and a dig. The latter tied her career-best with a match-high 10 digs to go with four aces and four assists.
Sophomore setter
Sydney Lore (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) also finished with a nice line, leading all players with 21 assists to go with eight digs, five kills and a match-high five aces. Junior right-side hitter
Paola Toledo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Colegio Catolico San Rafael) had 11 errorless swings to finish with seven kills (.636) to go with three digs. Rookie outside hitter
Dayshia Espinosa (El Paso, Texas/Pebble Hills) also finished with five kills and five digs. Junior defensive specialist
Katrina Nguyendon (Union, N.J./Union) recorded four digs and four aces.
vs. Maritime
Needing slightly more umph in this one, NJCU still managed to down the Privateers (2-4) in three sets. Freshman outside hitter
Rachael Pharo (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) led the way in this one, notching seven kills, three aces, five digs and a pair of assists for a match-high 10 points.
Toledo led all players with nine kills and one error on 17 swings (.417) to go with three assists and two digs. Seickendick was 7-for-10 on swings with one error (.600), as well as a block and a dig. Lore finished with her third double-double of the season and of her career after leading all players in assists (24) and digs (13). She also had three aces and two kills. Bartko also had eight digs, a pair of aces, two assists and a kill.
What's Next:
The Gothic Knights return to NJAC play on Tuesday night, Sept. 28, at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J. They then have a quad-tournament in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., next weekend (Oct. 1-2). Then, on Tuesday night, Oct. 5, they travel to Camden, N.J., to face Rutgers-Camden before finally returning to the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) on Friday night, Oct. 8, against Rosemont College.
