CAMDEN, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's soccer team faced off with New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Rutgers-Camden on the road on Saturday, Oct. 1, and — despite the even shot-on-goal opportunities, which was tied 5-5 — the Gothic Knights fell to the Scarlet Raptors 3-1. Junior forward
Kim Brites (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) scored in the 88th to make it a one-goal game and Jersey City had a couple chances to follow before Rutgers seeled it with the insurance goal in the 90th.
Freshman forward
Ariana Flores-Ortiz (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) got things started for the Gothic Knights (3-5-3, 0-3 NJAC), but her shot was turned aside early in the sixth minute by the Scarlet Raptors (4-4-1, 3-0 NJAC) goalkeeper. Rutgers-Camden rang one off the crossbar in the 13th for the home team's first scoring chance. Next, junior midfielder
Samantha Szymanski (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) attempted an on-target shot in the 27th, but was stopped to keep it scoreless. The match looked to remain that way with time winding down in the first, however the Scarlet Raptors took a corner late in the 45th and the ball snuck inside the post for the game's first goal, making it 1-0 with just 13 seconds left until the half.
Freshman keeper
Lorraine Valenzuela (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) made her first save of the day in the 55th, however early in the 60th, Rutgers-Camden made it 2-0 via a breakaway. The rookie netminder then turned aside the next on-target attempt in the 68th. Next, Jersey City looked to senior captain
Victoria Gil (South River, N.J./South River) in the 80th, but her shot on goal was turned aside. Another senior captain in back
Michelle Taras (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) took the next shot midway through the 88th, but it was turned aside and resulted in a corner kick. Freshman midfielder
Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) sent a perfectly placed corner to the front of the net seconds later, and Brites put it into the back of the net for her team-leading seventh tally of the season — she's tied for fourth in the NJAC in goals — to cut the deficit in half.
However, with the Green and Gold pinching late to try and tie it up, which included a blocked shot late in the 89th and a pair of corners early in the 90th, Rutgers-Camden capitalized with 17 seconds remaining to notch an insurance goal and make it 3-1.
