MADISON, N.J. — A day after dropping just four total games over four sets of unbeaten play, New Jersey City University men's tennis junior captain
Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) continued to triumph on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Northeast Regional Championships, which are being hosted on the campus of Drew University. Teynie faced some extremely tough competition on Saturday, but still managed to persevere and has advanced to the semifinal round on Sunday, Oct. 2.
After going 2-0 on Friday, Sept. 30, in the First and Second Rounds, Teynie started of Saturday morning with a Round of 16 match against one of arguably the toughest players in the entire Northeast in Andy Zhu of Renssalear Polytechnic Institute. The junior battled tough but found himself down 1-0 followed a tough 2-6 loss in the first set. However, he forced an extra game in the second set and evened it out at 1-1 after taking it 7-5. Then, playing in the third-set tiebreak, Teynie and Zhu went point for point before the Gothic Knight eventually came out on top, 11-9, to advance to the quarterfinal round later that day.
In the afternoon, Teynie found himself matched up with an extremely familiar foe in Matthew Michibata of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival The College of New Jersey. The pair had met twice before, both in the Spring of 2021, and Teynie came out on top in a battle of All-NJAC performers on both occasions. Today was no different as the Gothic Knight captain dispatched his conference rival in straight sets (6-0, 6-3).
