MADISON, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's tennis team kicked off its 2022-23 season with its first match of the Fall today, Tuesday, Oct. 11. The Gothic Knights took care of business on the road, dispatching FDU-Florham by a score of 8-1.
Jersey City (1-0) took care of doubles quickly as All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) selections senior
Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) and sophomore
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) teamed up at first doubles to sweep their foes from FDU-Florham (0-1). Then, sophomore
Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School) and freshman
Sophia Jurina (Munich, Germany/Carl-Spitzweg-Gymnasium) paired up at second doubles to give NJCU the 2-0 lead with an 8-1 win before the squad took third doubles via forfeit.
In singles play,
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) became the first player not named
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) — her sister, who is a junior and did not compete today — to compete at first singles for the Gothic Knights in the brief now-three season history of the program. The sophomore swept her foe from the Devils (6-2, 6-2). Jurina took up the reigns at second singles for the day and picked up a scoreless sweep. Another freshman made her collegiate debut as rookie
Mar Julia (Barcelona, Spain/INS Sant Quirze) — sister of men's standout junior Jordi Julia — fought hard for the three-set comeback win at #3 singles (1-6, 7-5, 10-4). Finally, after droppig fourth singles, NJCU took fifth and sixth by forfeit for the 8-1 overall team victory.
