ROME, Ga. — Junior captain
Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) of the New Jersey City University men's tennis team represented his program on Day 1 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup on Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Rome Tennis Center on the campus of Berry College. The Gothic Knight standout went 1-1 on the day and will continue to compete on Day 2 of play tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 14.
Competing in the competition formerly known as the Small College Championships, Teynie's start to the morning was delayed slightly due to rain. However, finally getting started at 11:00 a.m., the junior from France took set #1 over Nolan Shah, 6-4, of perennial Division III powerhouse Emory University — Shah also ended 2021-22 as one half of the #2-ranked doubles pair in the country. Unfortunately, Shah bounced back and won sets two and three (6-4, 6-3), sending Teynie to the back draw.
Returning to the court at 4:00 p.m., Teynie faced off with Marco Siviero of Gustavus Adolphus College, a program that ended 2021-22 ranked #17 in the country. Teynie again took the first set, 6-3, but then dropped set #2, 2-6, to face another decisive third. However, this time Teynie held serve and won 6-3 to advance to the back draw semifinals.
Up Next:
He will return to action on Friday and face off against Caleb Wilkins from Chapman University in the semifinals. Wilkins ended 2021-22 as the #33-ranked singles player in all of Division III.
