Men's Tennis Starts off Dual Season Strong with 9-0 Home Sweep of Baruch

Gothic Knights Dispatch Perennial CUNYAC Champs

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's tennis team picked up a strong 9-0 sweeping victory on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 15, as the Gothic Knights opened up dual match play for the 2022-23 season against Baruch College at the Lincoln Park Tennis Courts.

NJCU (1-0) dropped just three games in doubles play to go up 3-0 before singles began against the Bearcats (1-1) and then the Gothic Knights won five of the six matches in straight sets, as well as a three-set battle at #1. Newcomers freshman Pedro Caro-Accino Roca (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain/British School of Gran Canaria) and sophomore Joaquin Pluis (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Santa Felicitas) teamed up for the first win of the day, an 8-0 sweep at third doubles. Then, #2 was next to finish as senior Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) and junior Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) combined for the 8-2 victory. Finally, juniors Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) paired up for the 8-1 win at #1 doubles.

Singles play saw Julia finish first (6-1, 6-0) at third to make it 4-0 overall before Caro-Accino Roca clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-0, win of his own at fifth singles. Still playing hard, junior Gerard Loras (Tortosa, Spain/Col·legi Diocesà Sagrada Família) earned the sweep (6-1, 6-0) at sixth singles before Weiss closed it out at #2 with a 6-0, 6-1 win. The second-to-last match to finish was Pluis at #4 singles, where he won 6-1, 6-1.

Ley, playing at #1 singles for the first time in his collegiate career, had the most competitive match of the day. The junior dropped the first set (6-4) before forcing a third and decisive set thanks to a hard-fought tiebreak win in the second, 7-6(7). There, he won the third set tiebreak 10-7 to clinch the victory and the 9-0 sweep for Jersey City.
