Men's Wrestling Releases Schedule for Program's Third Season in 2022-23

Gothic Knights Set to Host Three Dates, Including December 10th Tri

October 04, 2022

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's wrestling team, along with fourth-year head coach Harry Turner, has released the 2022-23 schedule for the upcoming season. The Gothic Knights are slated to compete at 11 regular-season events throughout the campaign, including a trio of home dates at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC).

NJCU kicks off action with an intersquad exhibition, also known as wrestle-offs, at the JMAC on Nov. 6 with the Green vs. Gold Dual. Regular-season action begins the following weekend, Nov. 13, with the Electric City Duals, hosting by the University of Scranton. Jersey City's first one-off dual match of the season then takes place six days later on Nov. 19 in Collegeville, Pa., against Ursinus College. The Gothic Knights hosted the Bears at the JMAC for the first-ever home event in program history last season (Nov. 20, 2021) and picked up four individual wins on the historic day.

After a couple weeks rest, the Green and Gold return to action in Bristol, R.I., for the Roger Williams University Duals Tournament on Dec. 3. History for this young program will continue to be made as NJCU is then scheduled to host the first-ever home tri in the existence of Gothic Knights' men's wrestling. Worcester Polytechnic Institute — NJCU secured the first-ever victory in program history last season against the Engineers — and Johnson & Wales University — the Knights faced the Wildcats in Providence, R.I., on Dec. 11, 2022 — come to the JMAC on Dec. 10. Jersey City returns to the road nine days later for the King's College (Pa.) Duals on Dec. 19 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to close out the 2022 portion of the schedule.

The New Year kicks off with the second tri of the season for the squad, this time on the campus of Hunter College in New York on Jan. 7 against SUNY Brockport and the hosting Hawks. NJCU has never faced Brockport and looks to follow up last year's first-ever home win in program history, a 42-13 decision over Hunter. One week later, the Gothic Knights travel down to Waynesburg, Pa., for another road tri against first-time foes McDaniel College and Waynesburg University on Jan. 14. The Garden State rivalry then renews for Jersey City as The College of New Jersey comes to the JMAC for the first time ever on Jan. 20 after last season's Jan. 21, 2022, meeting in Ewing, N.J.

Jan. 28 is a huge day of action for NJCU Athletics as, following a 1:00 p.m./3:00 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) basketball doubleheader against Kean University at the JMAC, the men's wrestling program will host neighboring New York University at 7:00 p.m. in the second-ever meeting against the Violets. The Gothic Knights hit the road two more times in the regular-season, first in Edison, N.J., against Middlesex County College for the first time ever on Feb. 4, and then up to Cortland, N.Y., for a Feb. 11 clash with SUNY Cortland. NJCU nearly took down the Red Dragons at the JMAC last season on Feb. 4, 2022, falling 27-24.

Postseason competition begins with the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Mideast Regional Championships on Feb. 24 and 25. Last season, four NJCU grapplers placed in the top eight in their respective weight classes, led by 157-pounder, third-place finisher and National Qualifier now-senior Jeff Johnson (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and the team placed 12th overall. Then, should any Gothic Knights qualify, the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling National Championships are scheduled for March 10-11 at the Berglun Center in Roanoke, Va. Johnson wrestled twice last season at Nationals.

Fans can attend all NJCU men's wrestling home matches at the JMAC. All Gothic Knights home games will also be streamed live on GothicVision, which can be found at www.NJCUGothicKnights.com/GothicVision or via the GothicVision app, available in both the iOS app store and on Android, as well as Roku.
