ADRIAN, Mich. — The New Jersey City University women's wrestling team, ranked #10 nationally in the preseason National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Poll, competed at the Adrian College Women's Wrestling Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 13. The Gothic Knights saw two individual podium finishes and placed 13th as a team.
Leading the way for the Gothic Knights was junior co-captain
Naomi Henry (Brooklyn, N.Y./Wingate). The third-year member of the Green and Gold faced off against a tought guantlet of competitors, but managed to seel third place at 123 pounds with a 3-1 record on the day. She started off with a bye in the round of 32 and in the round of 16, took down Zoe Gaetjens of #11-ranked Gannon University via a 10-0 technical fall with 16 seconds remaining in the first period. Then, in the quarterfinals, Henry pinned Rose Ann Marshal of #16-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at the 1:27 mark in the first period. After falling to Amani Jones, the #3-ranked 123-pounder in the nation of national #1 North Central College via a 12-2 tech fall with just 15 seconds left in the second period, Henry advanced to the third-place bout. There she claimed bronze via a medical forfeit and is now 5-2 on the young season.
Then, placing fourth overall at 109 pounds was sophomore
Izabella Frezzo (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional). The second-year Gothic Knight, who is tied for #5 in the nation in her weight class, went 2-2 on the day. She started off with a bye of her own in the round of 32 and then faced off with Angelina Graff — also tied for #5 at 109 pounds nationally — of #1-ranked North Central. The two went head to head for the first round until Frezzo pinned Graff 1:02 into the second period for the win. Then in the quarterfinals, she took on Samantha Kruize of #4 McKendree University and pinned her in 30 seconds to move on to the semifinals. Frezzo met the top ranked 109-pounder in the nation, Sydney Petzinger of #1 North Central. The two battled all the way to the end of the second and final period before Frezzo lost by fall with just six seconds left. After a brief spell, Frezzo returned to the mat for the third-place match, but dropped an extremely tight decision, 11-10, to Trinity Malave, also of top-ranked North Central.
Four other Gothic Knights competed on the day, as well, in freshmen
Dyanne Pelaez (Fords, N.J./Woodbridge) and
Somaia Elokda (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne), sophomore
Kayla Zeppetelli (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park) and junior
Bella Serrano (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan).
