Men's Soccer Tallies Season-High Mark in 7-0 Win over CCNY

Evande, Bimboza Both Notch Two-Goal Efforts

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's soccer team scored a season-high seven tallies in the shutout victory at home on Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex on Wednesday, Nov. 2, against the City College of New York.

After a little bit of back-and-forth possession to start the match, the Gothic Knights (9-5-2) got things started late in the 16th as newly-crowned First Team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) selection junior forward Maximo Vargas (Montevideo, Uruguay/The British Schools) made it 1-0. He nearly scored moments earlier, but was turned aside. However, freshman midfielder Jonathan Caballero (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) made a nice play, intercepting the throw from the CCNY (3-11-1) goalkeeper. He subsequently found Vargas in front who made a nice play from right to left and scored. Then, senior forward Ryan Evande (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) made it 2-0 early in the 27th. Junior midfielder Thiago Duarte (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) got it started with free kick just outside the box. His attempt was blocked by the wall, but trickled just through. There, sophomore midfielder Lucca Cordone (Manantiales, Uruguay/IUA Punta del Este) picked it up and tried to sneak the ball through the right post, but was turned aside. Evande jumped all over the rebound to put his squad up by two. NJCU held that 2-0 lead through the end of the half before Evande notched his second goal of the game in the 48th. Freshman midfielder Jacobo Espinosa (South Hackensack, N.J./Union City) intercepted a clearing attempt right outside the box and found Evande at the top of the box. The senior then settled, turned and ripped a shot into the back of the net to make it 3-0. Sophomore forward Jaime Bimboza (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) then put his fingerprints on the game for Jersey City. He began by drawing a foul inside the box in the 50th and then converted on the penalty to make it 4-0. Then, early in the 64th, freshman midfielder Kevin Alves (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) ripped a shot outside the box that was blocked. The ball, however, snuck right past the back line and Bimboza had a wide open chance on net to make it 5-0. Alves then got one of his own in the 71st. Freshman forward Nate Russell (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) sent a nice through ball out to Alves and the freshman then found himself in a one-on-one with the Beavers' keeper, juking him out and scoring to make it 6-0. Finally, junior midfielder Pau Torrebella (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Banks) made it 7-0 in the 73rd. Freshman back Cristian Hernandez (Elizabeth, N.J./Frank J. Cicarell Academy) blew by nearly the entire CCNY defense and took a very nice shot on goal, but was turned aside. The rebound rolled to the wide-open left side of the net, where Torrebella tapped it in to close out the scoring on the afternoon. Up Next:
