DOVER, Del. —
After falling to Division I Monmouth University, 79-70, top open the season on Thursday, Nov. 12, the New Jersey City University women's basketball team took on another Division I foe in Delaware State University tonight, Monday, Nov. 21, on Bayhealth Court in Memorial Hall. The Gothic Knights lost the game 88-44 in its final non-conference tune-up before the start of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play tomorrow night, Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Jersey City (0-2) opened up the first quarter with a strong start as the squad led the Hornets (2-3) 6-5 early. Senior guard
Laney Fox (Parkland, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) was the main source of production to that point as she produced five of those six points from the field. The other point came from junior guard
Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus), converting a technical foul free throw to open up the game. Unfortunately for the Gothic Knights, after a variety of turnovers, the Hornets came alive and went on an 11-0 run to lead Jersey City 18-8. The Green and Gold only converted two more field goals in the quarter and trailed 25-12 at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw a similar deficit for NJCU, but a much stronger display of defense from Jersey City. The squad only allowed 16 points to the Hornets in the second. The Green and Gold, however, managed 16 points themselves as both Rodriguez (15) and Fox (10) cracked double digits at the break. At the end of the second, the Hornets led NJCU 41-28.
The second half saw the Gothic Knights struggle again offensively, scoring just 16 more for the remainder of the contest. The Hornets brought a strong offensive presence as well, outscoring the Green and Gold 47-20. At the game's end, Delaware State won by a final of 88-48 over NJCU.
Highlights:
- Rodriguez finished with a game-high 21 points, going 8-of-8 at the free throw line and 6-of-12 from the field.
- Fox also ended with 17 points, shooting 6-of-14 from the field, including 2-of-7 from three point range.
