WAYNE, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's basketball team fell on the road in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) competition tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 30, as William Paterson University defeated the Gothic Knights, 71-51.
The first quarter started out strong for NJCU (1-3, 1-1 NJAC) as the squad went up 5-0 early and maintained that lead at 7-2 with 6:23 remaining in the period. Overall, Jersey City took a two-point, 15-13 lead into the break over the Pioneers (4-2, 1-1 NJAC). However, as the Gothic Knights clung to a one-point, 23-22 lead with 5:03 remaining in the second quarter, William Paterson finished off the half on a 14-4 run and took a 38-27 lead after 20:00 of play.
The Pioneers managed to go up by 14 in the third quarter at 45-31 with 3:50 left before they eventually extended their lead to 20 with the final two points — a pair of free throws — of the night to make it 71-51 for the final.
Highlights:
- Junior guard
Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) had a team-best 11 points to go with four boards, a team-high three assists and a game-best four steals.
- NJCU was in foul trouble all night long, getting called for 20 personals throughout the game, and four players had at least three fouls.
- Junior forward
Kyara Cowan (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) finished with four points, a game-high-tying two blocks and three boards over just 14 minutes due to foul trouble.
- Forwards sophomore
Liyah Allen (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) and freshman
Jalynn Clark (Irvington, N.J./Elizabeth) each ended with six points, a block, an assist and a team-high-tying seven boards apiece. Allen had the start and played 21 minutes, while Clark saw 20 minutes off the bench.
- Senior forward
Janari Newsome (Newark, N.J./Technology) saw a career-high-tying 20 minutes on the floor and chipped in four points, six boards, two steals, two assists and a block.
- Senior guard
Laney Fox (Parkland, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) finished with eight points and four boards.
