Baseball Announces 2023 Schedule, Including 15 Home Dates at the Gerrity

December 19, 2022

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University baseball team released its 2023 schedule today, Tuesday, Dec. 20, and the Gothic Knights are currently scheduled for 39 games, including 15 home dates at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex and four games in on the campus of Marietta College in Ohio in mid-March.

NJCU's season-opener will be a big one as the squad travels down to Coney Island to face SUNY Brockport on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Maimonides Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones — MiLB High-A affiliate of the New York Mets. Road play at minor league stadiums continues for the Gothic Knights as they then head up to Wappingers Falls, N.Y., to face off with Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Dutchess Stadium, home of the Hudson Valley Renegades — High-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. NJCU has topped the Knights in five of the last seven meetings, dating back to 2012. Finally, road play concludes on Wednesday, March 1, as Jersey City heads to Hackettstown, N.J., to face off with Centenary University — the Green and Gold topped the Cyclones 14-6 in March of 2021, including some strong play from a tri of rising seniors Ricky Voss (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional), Justin Wiltsey (Hamilton Township, N.J./Hamilton West) and Jimmy Vizzoni (Hamilton, N.J./Trenton Catholic).

Home play then begins on Tuesday, March 7, as Moravian University comes to the Gerrity. Two days later, John Jay College visits Jersey City on Thursday, March 9, as the Gothic Knights and Bulldogs square off for the first time since 2013. NJCU then heads out to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Wednesday, March 15, to square off with Wilkes University. The Green and Gold then head to Marietta, Ohio, for a four-game trip, hosted by Marietta College. The Gothic Knights first go head-to-head with Johnson & Wales University on Friday morning, March 17, and will then face the hosting Pioneers early that same evening. On Saturday, March 18, NJCU takes on a to-be-determined opponent before closing out the trip on Sunday, March 19, against Kalamazoo College. Jersey City returns to the East Coast on Tuesday, March 21, for a road game at Baruch College in New York — the Gothic Knights bludgeoned the Bearcats 20-2 last March, including five RBI for rising senior Josh Hernandez (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista Community) (3-for-3 with two doubles and a homer). The squad returns home for two straight as Alvernia University and Drew University come to the Gerrity on Wednesday and Thursday, March 22-23, respectively. NJCU then heads down to Westminster, Md., to meet up with McDaniel College on Sunday, March 26, for the third time in the last four seasons.

A couple days later, the Gothic Knights begin a five-game homestand that spans a seven-day period, including NJCU's New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener. Penn State Abington kicks it off on Tuesday, March 28 — first meeting for the two programs since 2017 — followed by Muhlenberg College on Thursday, March 30. Then, the first official doubleheader of the season kicks off NJAC play on Saturday, April 1, as The College of New Jersey comes to the West Side — NJCU split against the Lions in 2021 but dropped a pair of tight ones in Ewing, N.J., in 2022. Manhattanville College closes out the homestand for the Gothic Knights on Tuesday, April 4. NJCU topped the Valiants 12-4 in Purchase, N.Y., last season behind a massive day from Voss (4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a homer). NJAC play continues, this time on the road with one game on Thursday, April 6, at Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., before the Profs then come back to the Gerrity for another on Friday, April 7 — the Gothic Knights are looking for their first win over Rowan since the 2017 season split.

Six of the team's next seven will be on the road, beginning with a Saturday, April 8, doubleheader at conference foe Stockton University in Galloway, N.J. The Ospreys own a slim 10-7 advantage against the Gothic Knights dating back to 2014. NJCU next heads out to Patchogue, N.Y., on Tuesday night, April 11, to take on St. Joseph's University-Long Island — the programs have been evenly matched dating back to 2015, with NJCU holding a 5-4 advantage. Jersey City heads back to the Gerrity for one on Thursday, April 13, against Montclair State University before heading to the Red Hawks the next day, Friday, April 14, to wrap up that home-and-home NJAC season series — NJCU is looking for its first win over MSU since a 2019 series split. Road action continues with another NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 15, against Rutgers-Camden — the Gothic Knighs split last year's doubleheader against the Scarlet Raptors in Jersey City, taking game to 6-5 in 10 innings. Rising junior Justin Moreno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Trenton Catholic) tied it up with a two-run, two-out triple in the bottom of the ninth before rising sophomore Nick Vaughn (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) walked in the game-winning run with one out and the bases loaded.

The College at Old Westbury comes to the Gerrity next on Tuesday, April 18, for the first meeting between the two squads since 2019. NJAC play continues on Thursday and Friday, April 20-21, with a home-and-home against Kean University, first at the Gerrity on Thursday and then out in Union, N.J., on Friday — the Gothic Knights are in search of their first win against the Cougars since the 2018 season split. The Green and Gold head to Mahwah, N.J., for a NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 22, against Ramapo College next. Heading into last season, the Gothic Knights had won one game against the Roadrunners dating back to April 2014, however the squad swept Ramapo in the 2022 season series by a combined score of 19-15. Rising senior Paul Tannucilli (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) hurled 7.0 innings, allowing two earned and struck out eight in the 7-6 game one win, while Voss (2-for-5 with three RBI) and fellow rising senior Caleb Ware (Newark, N.J./University) (3-for-5 with four RBI and a homer) led the squad to a 12-7 game two victory.

NJCU's road non-conference finale is up next in the Battle for Hudson Country as the squad heads to Hoboken for a Tuesday, April 25, single game under the lights against Stevens Institute of Technology. The Gothic Knights last beat the Ducks in 2016, but the teams have been extremely tight in their previous three matchups in 2018, 2020 and 2022, with Stevens holding the slight edge in run production, 12-8. Jersey City returns to the Gerrity for its penultimate home NJAC clash of the season against Rutgers-Newark on Thursday, April 27, before heading to play at the Scarlet Raiders on Friday, April 28, in the team's regular-season road finale. Conference play concludes on Saturday, April 29, at home with a doubleheader against defending NJAC champs William Paterson University. The Gothic Knights split with the Pioneers last season with both games in Wayne, N.J., taking game one 10-8 and dropping game two in a high-scoring, 15-12 loss. Five players had multi-hit days, including Hernandez, who closed out the game on the mound with a three-inning, two-strikeout shutout save. Vizzoni went 3-for-6 with four RBI in game two.

The regular-season comes to a close on Monday, May 1, against Saint Elizabeth University on Senior Day. Voss and Vizzoni each had five-RBI, two-homer performances against the Eagles in last season's 23-11 win, while Moreno had seven RBI and a pair of home runs, as well. Should NJCU qualify, the NJAC Tournament is scheduled for May 2-7. The 2023 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships are scheduled for May 19-June 8.
