BRISTOL, R.I. — The New Jersey City University men's wrestling team competed at the Roger Williams University Duals Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 3. The Gothic Knights competed in a trio of matches on the day.

NJCU (4-5) started off with a tight loss to Western New England University (3-3), falling to the Golden Bears, 30-19. Four Jersey City grapplers picked up victories against WNE. Sophomore Damianlee Torres (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) started off with 6-2 decision win at 125 pounds. Following him was sophomore Nick Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial) at 133 pounds, as he earned the first victory of his collegiate career via a fall early in the second. Senior captain Jeff Johnson (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) notched an 11-1 major decision win at 149 pounds and freshman 174-pounder Jazz Bull (New Brunswick, N.J./New Brunswick) collected a win by fall late in the third period for his fourth win and third pin of the year.

The Gothic Knights then fell to the hosting Hawks (11-1) by a score of 41-7. Johnson and Bull each picked up wins against Rofer Williams, whith Johnson collecting a 4-1 decision at 149 and Bull winning by a 14-6 major decision at 165.

Finally, Jersey City faced off with #15-ranked Rhode Island College (2-2), but fell to the Anchormen, 43-6. A pair of Gothic Knights collected victories in this one. Johnson once again this time earned a 5-0 decision win at 149 pounds, while junior 197-pounder Deren Cercioglu (Totowa, N.J./Paramus Catholic) won a high-scoring 20-14 decision.

NJCU returns to action this Saturday, Dec. 10, for the squad's first home action of the 2022-23 season. The Gothic Knights will host a quad as #17-ranked Johnson & Whales University, #13-ranked New York University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute come to the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC). Jersey City will competed on Mat 1 all day, taking on JWU at 12:00 p.m. and WPU at 1:30 p.m., while NYU will be on Mat 2 throughout and faces WPU at 12:00 p.m. and JWU at 1:30 p.m.
