February 12, 2022

LEBANON, Ill. — The New Jersey City University women's wrestling team competed at the Bearcat Open, hosted by McKendree University, on Saturday, Feb. 12. The Gothic Knights had seven women compete on the day, headlined by freshman 109-pounder Izabella Frezzo (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional), who took home third-place overall in her respective weight class.

Frezzo finished with an overall record of 5-1 on Saturday. She started off with a win by fall in her championship round one match, 2:07 into the first period. Then, her only loss of the day came to nationally ranked #6 109-pounder Natalie Reyna of #2 McKendree. Moving to the second round of the consolation bracket, Frezzo immediately redeemed herself with a monumental victory over #3 ranked Pauline Granados of McKendree, taking the 2-2 tiebreaker with a late takedown to be the last to score.

In the consolation third round, Frezzo put on a dominant 12-1 technical fall performance to advance to the consolation semi final round. There, she made very quick work of her opponent from North Central College with a pin 1:01 into the first period. Frezzo closed out her day with a late-second period pin at the 5:51 mark to claim third place overall against Allicia Mahoe of Schreiner University.

NJCU's next top performance came from sophomore co-captain #7 Sandy Guerrero (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), who notched a consolation semifinalist finish at 191 pounds with a 4-2 overall record, including reeling off four straight victories. She started off in the championship second round after receiving a bye in the first, but was defeated by fall.

Then started her run in the consolation bracket. In round two, it took just 16 seconds to secure her first pin of the day. In the third round, she grinded to an 11-0 technical win, then followed up with a win by fall at 1:33 into the first in round four. In round five, she picked up her final win of the day with a pin 1:46 into the first to advance to the consolation semis. Unfortunately, Guerrero suffered the loss there to close out her day.

The other sophomore co-captain, #5-ranked 130-pounder Naomi Henry (Brooklyn, N.Y./Wingate) went 3-2 on the afternoon. She began with a win by fall early in the second period of her championship round one match to advance to the second round. There, she picked up an 8-0 decision win to move on to the quarterfinal round.

After falling by technical fall, Henry next competed in the consolation bracket fourth round and earned a 10-0 technical fall win to advance to round five of the consolation. There, Henry's day came to a close with a decision loss.
