Etienne Captures 200m Title at Monmouth Invite; Several Others Notch PRs

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Monmouth University Winter Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 12. Led by another marquee performance from senior captain Dave Etienne (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson), NJCU notched several personal records on the day.

The highlight of the day came when Etienne claimed a first-place finish in the men's 200 meter dash with an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship qualifying time of 22.53, crossing the line ahead of all 60 other competitors, including 28 Division I and II runners.

Junior Roger Campbell (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) also placed 11th overall in the same event with a personal-best time of 23.94. Among others, junior Xavier Freeman (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) also placed in the top 20 (18th) with a time of 24.12.

Another junior, Tyneil Jackson (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) placed 19th overall in the men's long jump out of 35 competitors, ahead of eight Division I and II jumpers, with a personal-record leap of 6.02 meters.

On the women's end, a couple highlights include juniors Arame Diouf (Weehawken, N.J./Memorial) and Destiny Gittens (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech). Diouf placed 29th in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 4.48 meters, while Gittens set a PR in the women's shot put with a toss of 8.25 meters to placed 43rd.

This was the final tune-up for both Gothic Knights teams before the 2022 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships. The meet, which will be hosted by NJCU, takes place on Monday, Feb. 21, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island, N.Y.
