Four Gothic Knights Collect Weekly Honors

March 28, 2022

PITMAN, N.J. / NEW YORK — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) and Skyline Conference announced their weekly award winners today, Monday, March 28, and four New Jersey City University student-athletes combined to win five honors.

We will start with sophomore Sidnie Dabbadie (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) of the Jersey City softball squad who was named NJAC Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career. She is the first Gothic Knight softball player to be named NJAC Pitcher of the Week since March 15, 2010, when Ashley O'Beirne accomplished the same feat. NJCU went 4-0 last week and Dabbadie was in the pitching circle for two of those victories, collecting her third and fourth wins of the season for her fourth and fifth complete games of the year. The right-hander finished with 12.0 innings pitched, allowed just six hits and a walk while striking out an eye-popping 19 batters without allowing a single run (earned or otherwise) – she leads the NJAC with a 1.48 ERA. Dabbadie started off with 5.0 innings and nine Ks in the 18-0 win over Brooklyn College on Wednesday, March 23, allowing just two hits. She then went the distance in the 1-0 win over Hunter College on Saturday, March 26, tossing 7.0 innings and allowed just four hits while striking out 10 for her third double-digit strikeout performance over the five games she's pitched this season.

Next, freshman Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) of the Green and Gold's women's tennis team was named NJAC Rookie of the Week for the first time in her career. Zorzan went 3-1 this past week as Jersey City went 1-1. The freshman started off by going 1-1 in Wednesday's home 7-2 loss to Division I Wagner College. After falling 8-4 at first doubles with her sister Giada, Sara claimed NJCU's only singles win of the afternoon, taking #5 singles in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-2). She and her sister then started off the 9-0 win over Yeshiva University on Sunday, March 27, with an 8-0 win at first doubles. Zorzan bumped up to fourth singles on Sunday, as well, and took home the 6-0, 6-0, win.

Moving over to men's volleyball, junior tri-captain middle blocker Brandon DaSilva (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) was named NJAC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career, and second time this season. Needing to play just eight of the 12 sets this week, DaSilva helped NJCU go 4-0 as the squad swept all four of their matches. He led the Gothic Knights in blocks (8) and blocks/set (1.00) despite not playing every set this week, adding six digs (0.75/set), four aces (0.50/set) and 19 kills (2.38/set) with just five errors on 28 swings (.500 hitting percentage). He started off with three kills on four swings and added a match-high-tying four total blocks and a dig in the 3-0 win at the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, March 22. He then notched nine kills and one error on 12 swings (.667) in the sweep at Purchase College on Thursday, March 24, adding two digs and a match-high-tying three total blocks. DaSilva closed out his week on Saturday at home, finishing with seven kills, a match-high-tying four aces, a block and three digs in another 3-0 win over Purchase.

Last but not least, freshman outside hitter Anthony Trivers (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) — also of NJCU men's volleyball — was named Rookie of the Week by both the NJAC and Skyline, each for the first time in his career. Trivers saw a career-high in playing time this past week. He played in all four matches, starting three and played in 10 of the 12 sets. He led the team in kills (34) and kills/set (3.40), notching just four errors on 58 swings for an astounding .517 swinging percentage. Trivers also finished second on the team in aces (6), for an average of 0.67/set and led NJCU with 36 serve receptions and did not get charged for a single receiving error. Finally, he led NJCU in points (42.5) and points/set (4.25) to go with 15 digs (1.50/set) and five total blocks (0.50/set). Trivers started off with four kills on eight error-less swings (.500) to go with a couple of digs in the three-set sweep at CMSV on Tuesday. Then, making the start in the three-set sweep at Purchase on Thursday, he totaled eight kills and one error on 12 swings (.583) to go with a match-high-tying two aces, six digs and a match-high-tying three total blocks. In Saturday morning's 3-0 win at home over St. Joeseph's College-Brooklyn, Trivers led all players with a career-best 13 kills and two errors on 22 swings (.500) to go with a pair of aces, three digs and a match-high-tying two total blocks. He closed out on Saturday afternoon with nine kills and one error on 16 swings (.500) to go with four digs and two aces in another sweep over the Panthers.
