BACK-TO-BACK: Guerrero Cements All-America Honors Once Again as Women’s Wrestling Competes on Day One of NCWWC Nationals

March 04, 2022

ADRIAN, Mich. – The 2022 National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) hosted the first day of competition on Friday, March 4 – hosted by Adrian College – and the New Jersey City University women's wrestling team saw three of its own compete for glory. All three secured at least one victory, however sophomore co-captain and 191-pounder Sandy Guerrero (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) cemented herself as a back-to-back All-American – the first in program history!

Guerrero, who will battle in the seventh-place match tomorrow to one-up her eighth-place All-America finish from last season, started of her day with back-to-back wins by fall in the opening two rounds of the championship bracket. She began with a 51-second pin over Amber Latta of #4 North Central College, followed by a pin at 2:20 in the next round of Kaycee Fitero of #14 Lindenwood University.

Guerrero – ranked #8 nationally – then squared off with #1-overall seed Sydnee Kimber of #2 McKendree University in the quarterfinals but was unfortunately defeated. She fired back in the consolation bracket with a late-second period pin at 5:25 to take down Sydni Scott of William Jewell College to move on. There, she went head-to-head with #5-ranked Katja Osteen of #3 Simon Fraser University, but was defeated in the first round by fall. She'll compete once tomorrow in the seventh-place match.

The other sophomore co-captain, 130-pounder Naomi Henry (Brooklyn, N.Y./Wingate), had a bye in the first round and then battled with #1-ranked Montana Delwader of #1 King University, but was defeated by fall. After a bye in the initial round of consolations, Henry then pinned Katrina Anderson of Ferum College at 1:24 to advance. Unfortunately, her run at nationals came to an end in the following round, falling by an 8-2 decision to #3-ranked Lauren Mason of Simon Fraser.

The third competitor of the day for the Gothic Knights was freshman 109-pounder and #8-ranked Izabella Frezzo (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional). She started off with a tough opening loss to #1-ranked Danielle Garcia of King by fall. She then reeled off two straight victories in the consolation bracket. First, she picked up a 12-0 tech fall at 5:53 over Cassie Lopez of #8 Presbyterian College. In the next round, she earned another tech fall (10-0) at 3:56 over Kylee Bentley of Hiram College. Frezzo's run at Nationals also came to a close in her next match as she fell to Angelina Graff of North Central after a second-round loss by fall.
