Guerrero Earns Seventh-Place All-America Finish to Finalize Back-to-Back Status

Sophomore 191-Pounder Notches Pin in Lone Match of the Day at NCWWCs

March 05, 2022

ADRIAN, Mich. — After picking up a trio of wins to clinch back-to-back All-America honors for the first time in program history, sophomore co-captain and 191-pounder grappler Sandy Guerrero (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) earned a victory in her lone match of the day on Saturday, March 5, on the second day of competition at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC). The victory, a win by fall at 1:07 in the first period, bumped Guerrero up to seventh place — this highest-ever finish for the New Jersey City University women's wrestling team in program history.

After entering the weekend ranked #8 nationally at 191 pounds, Guerrero has been dominant against lower-ranked competition at Nationals, pinning all three of her unranked foes on Friday, March 4. Unfortunately she suffered losses to the #1 overall seed and the #5 overall seed before finding her way to the seventh-place match against #7-ranked Journey Land of #RV Limestone University. #1 Sydnee Kimber won the National Championship, while #5 Katja Osteen placed sixth.

Looking to shed the monkey off her back, Guerrero broke the streak! She cemented her status as the seventh-place All-American by pinning Land in just over one minute of action. The West Orange native now has two collegiate All-America honors to add to her high school Regional and State Championships in 2020. She'll look to make it three in a row at NCWWCs next season.

Guerrero finishes the season with a team-best 18 victories compared to just eight losses. Additionally, 15 of her 18 wins came by pin (also a team-high), while two came via technical fall and one by decision.
