FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The New Jersey City University men's tennis team traveled to Farmingdale State College for a non-conference matchup on Friday, April 15. The Gothic Knights now move to 5-4 overall in the season, while the Rams drop to 3-5.
Jersey City (5-4) took the early lead after capturing all three doubles lines against Farmingdale (3-5). Senior co-captain Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) and sophomore Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) moved fast after taking down the Rams 8-1 at the #1 spot. Continuing their scoreless streak from Tuesday's senior match, the sophomore duo of Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) won 8-0 again at the #3 spot. To close it out, junior Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) and freshman Olaf de Lange (Maasland, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam) battled at the #2 spot, defeating their opponents in 7-4 in a tiebreak for the 8-game set.
The Gothic Knights kicked on the afterburners when singles rolled around, sweeping up six quick wins. Bourghelle walked away with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the #2 spot, followed by Ley with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #3. Julia followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at #4, then Weiss with a scoreless win at #5. While de Lange finished with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #6, Teynie won by an opponent retirement at the #1 line.
