Gothic Knights Pick up Three Weekly NJAC Tennis Honors

NJCU Nabs Three of Four Possible Awards

April 18, 2022

PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) released its weekly awards today, Monday, April 18, and the New Jersey City University men's and women's tennis teams combined to earn three of the four possible awards. Senior co-captain Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) of the men's squad was named NJAC East Player of the Week, while freshman Olaf de Lange (Maasland, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam) was selected as the East Rookie of the Week. For the women, freshman Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) was also named NJAC Rookie of the Week.

Bourghelle earns his first NJAC weekly honor of the season today, adding it to the one he won last season, as well. He went 4-0 this past week between first doubles and second singles as Jersey City won both its matches, including one in conference play. He began during the 9-0 sweep at home on Tuesday, April 12, at the Lincoln Park Tennis Courts over East Division foe Ramapo College on his Senior Day. Alongside sophomore Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine), Bourghelle picked up the 8-1 win at first doubles against the Roadrunners, followed by a straight-set, 6-4, 6-2, win at second singles later that day. Then, in the 9-0 non-conference sweep out on Long Island against Farmingdale State College on Friday, April 15, Bourghelle (against paired with Teynie) won 8-1 at first doubles, followed by a 6-0, 6-2, second singles win.

For Zorzan, this is her second NJAC Rookie of the Week award of the season. She also went 4-0 this past week as the Gothic Knight women posted a 2-0 record. She began with an 8-1 win at first doubles, paired with her older sister junior Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani), during the 9-0 sweep at home against Kean University on Thursday, April 14, followed later that day by a 6-0, 6-0, sweep at fifth singles against the Cougars. She and her sister then won again, 8-1, at first doubles in the 6-3 statement victory in Galloway, N.J., over Stockton University on Saturday, April 16. Zorzan closed out her week with a 6-2, 6-2, fifth singles victory against the Ospreys.

For de Lange, this is also his second NJAC East Rookie of the Week award of the year. The freshman posted a 3-0 mark during his team's 2-0 week. He began by winning at fifth singles on Tuesday against Ramapo, 6-1, 6-1. Then, as Jersey City topped Farmingdale State on Friday, de Lange started by winning in a hard-fought tiebreak teamed with junior Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) at second doubles, 8-7(4), before closing out his week at #6 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2.
