Men’s Tennis Falls at #26 Babson to Close out Massachusetts Trip

BABSON PARK, Mass. The New Jersey City University men's team closed out the road trip to Massachusetts with two huge singles wins against #26 Babson College today, April 22. Following the shutout win in yesterday's match against Clark University, the Gothic Knights brought the fight to the tough competitor to end the match down 7-2.

NJCU's (6-5) sophomore duo of Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) jumped to a 3-0 lead against the Beavers (12-5), but ultimately fell 8-4 at the #3 doubles spot. Both the #1 and #2 courts had the spectators on the edge of their seats – junior Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) and freshman Olaf de Lange (Maasland, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam) took their opponents to 7-7, where they fell 7-3 in the tiebreak. Senior co-captain Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) and sophomore Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) went back-and-forth with #1 team but were unable to capture the final doubles point, falling 8-6.

The Gothic Knights now trailed 3-0 moving into singles play. Julia and Weiss dropped their matches 6-1, 6-1 at the #3 and #5 spot, respectively. De Lange manged to grab a few more games, falling 6-1, 6-3 at #6. Ley brought the fire following doubles to take down his opponent 6-4, 6-2 at the #4 spot – the first win of the day for NJCU. Intensity didn't stop as Teynie battled at the #1, but ultimately fell in a tough 6-4, 6-2, battle. Bourghelle closed it out for Jersey City, taking his opponent to a third set tiebreak at the #2 spot. The senior co-captain fought to bring home the final win for the Green & Gold, winning the tiebreak 10-7.

Up Next:
Jersey City returns home for a quick turnaround with the most anticipated match of the 2022 season – the Gothic Knights host #30-ranked The College of New Jersey to defend their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) East Division Championship after ending the Lions' reign last spring. The event takes place at the Lincoln Park Tennis Center on Sunday, April 24, at 1:00 p.m. This will be NJCU's final regular-season match. Should they win, the Gothic Knights would advance to the NJAC Championship match against the West Division winner in Wisconsin on Saturday, May 7.
