Hernandez Picks up First-Career NJAC Baseball Player of the Week Nod

April 25, 2022

PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) announced its weekly award winners today, Monday, April 25, and junior outfielder/pitcher Josh Hernandez (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista Community) of the New Jersey City University baseball team was named NJAC Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Hernandez had a big week for the Gothic Knights as NJCU went 2-2, including the first NJAC sweep for the program since 2018, and is currently riding a 10-game on-base streak. He took care of business at the plate and on the mound when Jersey City needed it most. Offensively, he finished the week 5-for-11 (.455) in the leadoff spot, scoring five runs, cracked his third homer of the season, walked five times, was hit by a pitch, had a sacrifice fly, stole a base and knocked in two runs. On the mound, he tossed 5.1 innings over two games, striking out three batters and recording the first two saves of his collegiate career without allowing a single earned run and just three hits – opponents hit just .150 against him.

In the loss at #14 Kean University on Thursday, April 21, he was 2-for-3, scored twice, walked once and drove in a run on his solo jack. On Friday, April 22, at home against the Cougars, Hernandez was again 2-for-3 with a walk. In the sweep on Saturday, April 23, against Ramapo College at home, Hernandez was 1-for-5 with three runs, a RBI, three walks, a stolen base, a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly. The junior transfer's pitching performance began in the top of the eighth in game one against the Roadrunners. He came in for the four-out save, allowing just one hit and one walk to slam the door for the 7-6 victory. Hernandez then came in and tossed 4.0 innings in relief in game two to lock down the 12-7 victory over Ramapo, striking out three batters and allowing just two hits.
