EWING, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's tennis team's outstanding run in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play this season has come to a close today, Saturday, April 30, as the Gothic Knights — who were seeded #2 in the NJAC Tournament — were defeated by #1 seed The College of New Jersey, 5-0, in the Championship match.
The Gothic Knights (8-7), who advanced to the NJAC Quarterfinal as the #6 seed in their inaugural 2020-21 season, made a stunning improvement this season, posting a 5-1 mark in conference play to earn the #2 seed. Jersey City was picked as the #3 seed and darkhorse in the preseason coaches' poll, receiving one first place vote. NJCU hosted a semifinal match against Stockton University and defeated the Ospreys, 5-0.
Today, the Green and Gold took on TCNJ (16-2) in the championship match, and despite some tough circumstances, put up a strong fight. Having to withdraw from third doubles and sixth singles to start down 2-0, Jersey City fell down 4-0 after doubles, but had some very competitive action going on in singles play before the match was called at 5-0.
Freshman
Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School), playing up at second singles, dropped her first set 7-5, while fellow rookie
Mila Gligorov (Milan, Italy/Collegio San Carlo) trailed just 5-4 in the second set at third singles. Another freshman,
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) was playing up at fourth singles and dropped her first set in a tiebreak, 7-6(1). Graduate student captain
Brittany Waugh (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) was early on in her second set at fifth singles at the time the match ended, as well.
