Andrews Adds AVCA National Player of the Week Honors to Stellar Week; Fourth in Program History to Earn Accolade

April 05, 2022

LEXINGTON, Ky. — For just the fourth time in program history, a New Jersey City University men's volleyball player was selected as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Player of the Week. The organization announced their weekly winners earlier this afternoon, Tuesday, April 5, and senior outside hitter Jonathan Andrews (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) was the honoree. He joins Jalen Sorrell (Feb. 17, 2015), Sheldon Coure (March 4, 2014) and Damon LaSalle (Feb. 20, 2006) as the only other Gothic Knights to receive the accolade.

Andrews makes it 3-for-3 this week, having already been named Player of the Week by both the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) and Skyline Conference over the past two days.

Andrews was dominant this past week as he led the Gothic Knights to a 4-0 record in Skyline play, as well as a clinch of the #2 seed in the conference tournament. He finished the week with 54 kills (5.40/set) on 90 swings with just 12 errors (.467 hitting percentage), adding eight aces (0.80/set), 18 digs (1.80/set) and had 62.5 points (6.25/set). He began by needing to play just one set in the three-set sweep at St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn on Tuesday, March 28, but was still an error-less 4-for-6 on swings.

Then, in his senior night match against Yeshiva University (3-0 win) on Thursday, March 31, Andrews tied a career-high with a match-best 26 kills on 43 swings with five errors (.488) – including 12 kills in just the first set – to go with three aces and five digs. The road tri-match on Saturday, April 2, began with him notching a match-best nine kills and four errors on 16 swings (.313) to go with a match- and season-high five aces and a trio of digs in the 3-0 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Finally, in the season-finale sweep of Sarah Lawrence College, Andrews once again led all players with 15 kills and three errors on 25 swings (.480) to go with a match-best 10 digs for his third double-double of the season.

Up Next:
Jersey City returns to action on Thursday night, April 7, as the #2 seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament. The Gothic Knights will host #3 seed Ramapo College at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) in what will be a rubber match for the 2022 season.
