NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The New Jersey City University men's and women's track & field squads competed on day one of the New Captains Classic & Combined Events today, Friday, April 8. The two-day meet is being hosted by Christopher Newport University and today featured the multis, 5000 meter events and some various throws.
For NJCU, junior
Tyneil Jackson (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) led the way as he competed in the men's javelin throw. Although he fell shy of his personal-best mark, Jackson took home third place in the event out of 13 competitors with a toss of 40.09m, which was just 00.26m shy of the second place finisher.
Four other Gothic Knights made their debuts in various events, as women's throwers sophomore Shantell Worrell placed sixth in the hammer toss (29.79m), while freshman
Evie Tahmazian (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) placed eighth in the same event (21.40m). Sophomore co-captain
Jake Sisk (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) debuted in the men's javelin toss with an eighth-place finish thanks to a throw of 30.57m.
In the 5000m, senior captain
April Gutierrez (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) placed fourth with a time of 23:52.12 on the women's side. For the men, junior
Jaime Tlatelpa (Jersey City, N.J./University Academy Charter) placed fifth (16:58.97), while sophomore
Topu Saha (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) debuted in the event with a seventh-place finish (17:52.36).
