Track Sees a Multitude of PRs on Day Two of New Captains Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The New Jersey City University track and field squads completed competition at the second and final day of the New Captains Classic, which was hosted by Christopher Newport University on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9. A whole host of Gothic Knights registered personal records on Saturday.

For the women, junior Lamya Young (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) notched PRs in both of her events as she placed sixth out of 15 and sixth out of 17 in the 100m and 200m with times of 13.23 and 28.47, respectively. In throws, junior Shantel Worrell (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder) — who PRed in yesterday's hammer throw — placed fourth out of 12  in the shot put with a personal record throw of 9.26m. She also placed sixth of 12 in discus with a toss of 28.56m. Rookie thrower Evie Tahmazian (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) placed eighth in shot and disk with tosses of 8.26m and 24.21m (PR), respectively.

For the men, the usual trio of junior Tyneil Jackson (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) and co-captains senior Dave Etienne (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) and sophomore Jake Sisk (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) stood out. Jackson, who threw a PR in javelin yesterday, competed in four events today, highlighted by personal best marks in the 100m and triple jump. He placed ninth out of 30 runners in the 100 with a time of 11.44 and came in third out of seven in a triple jump of 13.27. Etienne did not PR, but still managed a third-place finish out of 25 runners in the 200m with a time of 22.40. Sisk showed out in the 800m and placed sixth out of 21 runners with a personal best time of 2:00.17.

Five other runners to PR on the day:
- Junior Jason Garcia (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) placed 12th in the 100m (11.53).
- Junior Roger Campbell (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) placed seventh in the 200m (23.01).
- Junior Adnan Kpodo (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) placed 11th in the 800m (2:06.73).
- Junior Jaime Tlatelpa (Jersey City, N.J./University Academy Charter) placed sixth out of 14 in the 3000m (9:27.42).
- Junior Emmanuel Chinonso Abarah (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) placed third out of five in the 110m hurdles (17.10).

Jackson, Campbell, Garcia and Etienne also teamed up to place second with a time of 43.94 in the 4x100m relay.

Up Next:
The Gothic Knight men and women return to action next weekend, Friday and Saturday, April 15-16. A contingent of competitors will head to Princeton, N.J., for the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton University on both days. The rest of the crew will compete on Friday at the Greyhound Invitational, hosted by Moravian University in Bethlehem, Pa.
