CHAMPIONS! NJCU Men Take Home ECAC Title, Women Finish Second on Banner Day for Gothic Knights

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The New Jersey City University Gothic Knights have won the 2022 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship! The NJCU men took home first place out of 12 scoring teams over the two days – Wednesday and Thursday, May 18-19 – of competition, while the women also dominated to the tune of a second-place finish out of 14 scoring teams.
 
The men competed in 14 events over the two days and scored in every single one. Moreover, the Gothic Knights had top-three finishers in 12 of those events, including two first-place finishers – the 4x400 meter relay, which featured seniors Roger Campbell (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) and Dave Etienne (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson), junior Adnan Kpodo (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) and sophomore Jake Sisk (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway), as well as the 1,500-meter event, which was won by Sisk.
 
Campbell finished as the runner-up in the men's 200-meter dash (23.14), was third in the 100-meter dash (11.54) and led off the second-place 4x100-meter relay (44.08) – which also featured Etienne and juniors Jason Garcia (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) and Tyneil Jackson (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) – and the first-place 4x400 (3:40.35). Etienne also posted yet another sub-50 second time in the 400-meter dash to place second (49.99).
 
On the women's side of things, Jersey City took part in 10 different events and also scored in each one. Included in that were seven top-three finishes, including a quartet of first-place finishes – three came yesterday as junior Arame Diouf (Weehawken, N.J./Memorial) and senior April Gutierrez (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) claimed the crowns in the javelin throw (32.35m) and 5,000-meter event (23:41.34), respectively, as both were season-best marks, while the squad's 4x400-meter relay scored 10 points yesterday, as well. Junior Tiffany Ortiz (Jersey City, N.J./University Academy Charter) posted a personal-best time of 1:02.15 today in the 400m to place first.
 
Junior Lamya Young (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) placed second in the 100m today with a season-best time of 13.22. Additionally, the 4x100m squad of Young, Ortiz and freshmen Ashley Adames (Jersey City, N.J./County Prep) and Nyla Boyd (Thomson, Ga./Thomson), posted a season-best time of 53.07 to place second. For junior Shantel Worrell (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder), her huge hammer throw toss of 32.38m yesterday was a personal-best as she placed fifth.

The season on both sides officially comes to a close with a bang as unfortunately neither program notched a NCAA qualifier in their last action prior to the national championships. The Gothic Knights look to build off their season-ending success and come back strong for the cross country campaign in Fall 2022.
