Men's Soccer Improves to 5-0 Following Two-Goal Night from Vizcaino

YONKERS, N.Y. — The New Jersey City University men's soccer team, led by a two-goal performance from freshman Juan Vizcaino (Clifton, N.J./Clifton), toppled Sarah Lawrence College on the road on Monday night, Sept. 12, by a score of 4-0.

Jersey City (5-0) outshot the Gryphons (2-2) in on-target attempts by a 15-2 margin as senior keeper Nick Linebaugh (Linden, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) turned away both Sarah Lawrence shots to improve to 5-0 on the year, along with three shutouts. The Gothic Knights started things off with two shots on goal in the first 15 minutes before sophomore forward Danny Tobon (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) struck first to make it 1-0 in the 16th, assisted by junior Jayson Argueta (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield). This would be the eventual game-winner.

The squad took two more on-goal attempts over the next few minutes before Vizcaino scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 18th to make it 2-0, with Tobon notching the assist — the latter is now second on the squad with eight points. The Gothic Knights notched two more shots on goal in the half, but the score remained 2-0 after 45 minutes of play.

NJCU started off the second half with plenty of possession time, as well as two shots on goal, before the Gryphons were called for a yellow in the box in the 70th. Vizcaino lined up for the penalty and successfully converted on the try to make it 3-0. Two more shots on goal and 14 minutes of play later, senior NAIA transfer Sergio Tarrida (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/King Richard III College) scored his first-career NCAA goal with the Gothic Knights to make it 4-0 in the 84th, assisted by junior midfielder Nick Atehortua (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield).

Sarah Lawrence was called for a red in the 85th and played with 10 men for the remainder, and NJCU did manage another shot on goal, however, the final remained 4-0 as the Gothic Knights seeled the victory. The match itself was a very chippy one overall, with the teams combining for 11 total cards, including 10 that came in the 60th minute or later.

Up Next:
The Gothic Knights are scheduled to take a week's break before returning to action back in Jersey City on Monday, Sept. 19, when Brooklyn College comes to town for a 4:00 p.m. clash.
