JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's wrestling team hosted in-state and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival, #8-ranked The College of New Jersey at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) on Friday night, Jan. 20, for the first time in program history. The Gothic Knights put up strong performances across all 10 weight classes, including a pair of victories, but fell to the Lions, 41-7.
The highlights of the night for Jersey City (6-10) came one again at 149 pounds and 184 pounds. At 149, senior captain
Jeff Johnson (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) — ranked #5 in the Mideast Region by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), #13 nationally by WrestleStat.com and #22 nationally by d3wrestle.com — took on Mike Conklin of TCNJ (8-4). Conklin is ranked #4 in the Mideast Region, #25 by WrestleStat.com and #21 by d3wrestle.com. Johnson started it off with a takedown with just 22 seconds left in the first period. After Conklin managed an escape 10 seconds later, Johnson immediately took him down once again — Johnson led 4-1 after one period. Johnson managed an escape point with 1:05 left in the second period, while Conklin did the same with 25 seconds remaining in the third period and Johnson came away with the grind-it-out 5-2 decision that is sure to bump him up a few spots in the rankings. He is now a team-best 15-1 on the season.
At 184, junior
Farhan Khan (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) took home the 13-4 major decision victory. He recorded three successful takedowns in the first period and then snagged two more in the second period. He notched one more takedown with just four seconds remaining in the third period and held a 2:25 riding time advantage to nail down the victory.
