Rodriguez Again Named NJAC Player of the Week

Junior Earns Honor for Third Time in Four Weeks; Fourth Time this Season

January 30, 2023

PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) has once again recognized New Jersey City University women's basketball junior guard Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) as its NJAC Player of the Week today, Monday, Jan. 30. It is the fourth time this season, as well as the the third time in the past four weeks, that Rodriguez has collected this honor.

The nation's second-leading scorer (25.3 points per game), Rodriguez averaged exactly that this past week over three games, including two in NJAC play as NJCU went 1-2 overall. She added 4.7 assists – she's eighth in all of NCAA Division III with 5.7 assists per game – and 3.7 steals over 37.0 minute per game, as well. She started off with game highs in points (32), assists (6) and steals (5) over 38 minutes as NJCU topped William Paterson University at home at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) on Wednesday night, Jan. 25, by a score of 74-62. In the tough home loss on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 28, to first-place Kean University, Rodriguez still led NJCU in points (21) and assists (4) and led all players with a game-best five steals over 38 minutes. Finally, Jersey City fell at home to non-conference foe #3/1 (D3hoops.com/WBCA) Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 29, 88-64, but she still managed 23 points (team-high), six rebounds and a team-best four assists. Rodriguez has scored at least 20 points in 14 straight games and 16 of her 18 this year (double-digits in all).

Up Next:
Rodriguez and the rest of the Gothic Knights — now locked in a tie for second in the NJAC at 9-4 in conference play — look to bounce back on Wednesday night, Feb. 1, on the road in Mahwah, N.J., against Ramapo College for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Rodriguez dropped 24 points in this season's previous meeting with the Roadrunners, a home 78-70 loss, that she and the rest of the Green and Gold look to avenge this week.
