NEW YORK — The New Jersey City University men's wrestling team kicked off the New Year in style on Saturday, Jan. 7, with a pair of good matches on the campus of Hunter College. NJCU first went up against SUNY Brockport on neutral ground, but fell to the Golden Eagles in a tight one — 29-16 — before taking down the hosting Hawks, 38-13. Freshman Lucas Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial), wrestling at 125 pounds, was one of the Gothic Knights' highlights as the rookie went 2-0 with a comeback win and a pin.

First against the Hawks (0-5) at 11:00 a.m., the Gothic Knights (5-8) made quick work for the 25-point victory. Torre kicked it off with a win by fall just 56 seconds into the 125-pound bout. The, at 133 pounds, sophomore Jacob Baeza (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) made his collegiate debut and won his match by fall in just 24 seconds to put Jersey City up 12-0 at that point. After a tough major decision loss at 141, senior captain notched his 11th victory of the season with a 17-0 technical fall at 149 pounds. Freshman Zack Vera (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) followed up with a tight 3-0 decision victory at 157 pounds. The next two matches went the way of the Green and Gold via forfeit wins. Junior Farhan Khan (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) then locked into a tight match at 184 pounds in his return, but Gevorg Arakelov of Hunter took hom the 11-9 sudden victory. Another win by forfeit at 197 and a loss by fall at heavyweight closed out the 38-18 victory for NJCU.

Later in the afternoon at 1:00 p.m., the Gothic Knights clashed with the Golden Eagles (3-1), and fell in the highly-contested match. Torre began at 125 once again, but this time came from behind for the 11-10 decision to put NJCU up 3-0 early. Jersey City fell behind 10-3 after the bouts at 133 and 141 before Johnson put his squad back in the win column with a hard-fought 5-0 decision at 149 to make it 10-6 — he leads the team with 12 victories this season . A couple more losses brought the score back to 17-6 in favor of Brockport, but then the Gothic Knights picked up two big victories. Freshman Jazz Bull (New Brunswick, N.J./New Brunswick), wrestling at 174 pounds, pinned his opponent in just 24 seconds and is now 8-1 on the season. Khan came back at 184 pounds and won an 11-3 major decision to bring the score to 17-16. Brockport sealed the win over NJCU with wins by fall at 197 and heavyweight.
