JERSEY CITY, N.J. — In a game that was all about the keepers, the New Jersey City University men's soccer team faced off with #20-ranked Kean University on Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 18. Both teams' goalies made some tremendous saves in what ended in a scoreless 0-0 stalemate.
NJCU (6-6-2, 1-5-1 NJAC) had some serious scoring chances against the undefeated Cougars (9-0-6, 4-0-3 NJAC) in the home squad's first positive result against Kean since a 2-0 win back in 2013. The Gothic Knights had back-to-back chances in the 21st and 22nd, but one of the NJAC's top keepers turned both aside.
A major event in the match came following a physical scuffle in front of the net while getting set for a corner in the 38th which resulted in a red card ejection, bringing the Cougars down to 10 players on the field for the remainder.
Nearly 10 minutes into the second half, a Cougar was fouled in the box, setting up a penalty attempt in the 55th. Fortunately, the attempt rang off the crossbar and the game remained scoreless. The next best chance came in the 61st when fifth-year keeper
Nick Linebaugh (Linden, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) made an outstanding save.
The Gothic Knights nearly scored in the 64th and 65th with a pair of strong shots on goal, but still were unable to break through the scoreless draw. Each team managed one more shot on goal over the remainder and the 0-0 deadlock remained as final.
