Digristina's Tally Leads Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win at Lehman

Gothic Knights Do Not Allow a Shot on Goal by Lightning in Victory

BRONX, N.Y. — The New Jersey City University women's soccer team dominated non-conference foe Lehman College in every facet of the game today, Monday, Oct. 2, on the road. The Gothic Knights outshot the Lightning, 30-1 overall on the day, including 20-0 in on-target attempts and eventually came out on top by a final of 1-0.

NJCU (4-5-1) pelted the Lehman (1-5-1) keeper all day long, but the Lightning goalie was mostly up to the challenge throughout, making 19 stops on 20 chances. However, the one tally was all the Gothic Knights needed to come out on top for their fourth victory of the season, and third all-time in the series with Lehman.

After being turned aside six times, including early in the 40th, a pair of sophomores did the damage for the Green and Gold midway through the 42nd. Forward Ari Flores-Ortiz (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) took a pass in the box and split the Lightning backline. She then sent the ball to the foot of back Jess Digristina (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), who found the net for her first goal of the season and fifth of her career.

NJCU had one more chance in the 43rd, as well as 12 more on-goal shots in the second half, but never managed to sneak one through again in the one-goal victory. Sophomore forward Becky Lopez (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) led all players in total shots (7) and shots on goal (5) over 66 minutes on the pitch, while senior forward Kim Brites (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) and Flores-Ortiz each attempted three shots on goal. Digristina and sophomore midfielders Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) and Joselyn Reyes (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) each finished the day with two shots on goal apiece.

Up Next:
Due to last week's torrential rain and home postponement, the Gothic Knights return to action on Wednesday night, Oct. 4, for a 7:00 p.m. match against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival Rutgers-Camden, which will now be a road match in Camden, N.J. NJAC play then continues on the road in Mahwah, N.J., on Saturday night, Oct. 7, with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Ramapo College.
