GLASSBORO, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's soccer team, seeded a program-best #4 in the 2023 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament, entered the semifinal round this evening, Tuesday, Oct. 31, riding a hot streak of 5-1-3 over its previous nine matches. That momentum included the program's first-ever home NJAC Tournament game — and victory — this past weekend,
1-0 over Rutgers-Camden. The Gothic Knights gave the NJAC Tournament's top overall seed, #10-ranked Rowan University, all it could handle tonight, but unfortunately saw their conference postseason run come to a close in the 3-0 defeat.
NJCU (8-7-4, 3-3-3 NJAC) had a tough time breaking through the undefeated Profs (14-0-2, 8-0-1) backline all night, while the home team pestered Gothic Knights' sophomore keeper
Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) throughout. Fortunately, the second-year goalie was up to the task and, aside from a 16th-minute tally for Rowan, she kept the highly-ranked foes off the board until the 83rd. The Profs did manage a pair toward the end of the match to make it a 3-0 final.
Up Next:
The Profs now move on to the NJAC Championship match against second-seeded and #15-ranked The College of New Jersey, while the Gothic Knights await their postseason fate over the next week, including a strong possibility of qualifying for the 2023 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
